HOW COPY?
Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at 9:55AM "How Copy?" It means, "do you understand my last transmission?" or "is my transmission clear?" For example, if I am calling for a member, this is how it goes:
Ghost, how copy?
Then you would respond with:
Solid copy, go for Ghost.
"Solid copy" means you were able to understand my last transmission, and "go for Ghost" means you are the person I am trying to talk to.
Another way is like this... If you were to say "Val flank east, how copy?" If I understood I would respond with, "Solid copy, flanking east."
When we do comms, we address the other person first then address ourselves like this:
Ghost, this is Val, how copy?
Say that you didn't hear my transmission very well, you could ignore it and then I will repeat my transmission after a few seconds (which you should incorporate also,) or you may ask, "Repeat transmission."
We also say "over" when we end our transmission, so others know we are done talking.
We always repeat what has been asked of us as to keep everyone on the same page. For example, you say:
Val, this is Ghost, advance north and engage op-for. How copy? Over.
I would say:
Solid copy. Advancing north and engaging op-for. Over.
I could even say, "Ghost, this is Val," to assure you that you are talking to the guy you asked for. It's all how you and your team like to communicate.
That's about all we use. Here are some random comms jargon:
"5 by 5" means I understand.
"Lima Charlie" means loud and clear.
"Channel is compromised" means that the enemy knows your comms channel.
